Karla joined the firm’s Rapid City office in 2019 after spending nearly 6 years as a deputy state’s attorney for Pennington County and serving as the only female Judge Advocate Officer in the state, representing the South Dakota Army National Guard.  During her tenure as a county prosecutor, Karla tried dozens of cases and held the positions of Magistrate Court Prosecutor, Veteran’s Court Prosecutor, and Domestic Violence Prosecutor.  Her career as a JAG is equally impressive.  In 2016, Karla was mobilized for an in-country tour with the National Guard Bureau, where she served as Special Victim’s Counsel, representing service members in both the Air and Army National Guards who were victims of sexual assault.  Karla has also held assignments as a Judge Advocate of Government Counsel, Special Victims Child’s Counsel, and Legal Assistance Counsel.  Karla’s foray into to the practice of law was preceded by a judicial clerkship with the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court in Rapid City.

Karla’s practice at Bangs McCullen will focus on professional liability defense, civil defense, and the advocacy and protection of veterans’ rights.

Karla resides in Rapid City with her husband and daughter.  She is a Major in the South Dakota Army National Guard (Trial Defense) and also serves as an adjunct professor at Western Dakota Technical Institute.  In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, everything Disney, and vitamin “sea.”
